University of California San Francisco

UCSF Craniofacial Surgery Fellowship

Program Overview

The UCSF Craniofacial Surgery Fellowship is accredited by the American Society of Craniofacial Surgeons (ASCFS). It is based on a comprehensive pediatric and adult clinical foundation of activity spanning our free-standing UCSF Benioff Childrens’, University and Zuckerberg San Francisco General hospitals.

Trainees of the program will be exposed to all treatment phases of both pediatric and adult congenital and acquired craniomaxillofacial abnormalities. The goal of the program is to develop competence in all aspects of craniomaxillofacial surgery and in pediatric plastic surgery. The fellowship experience is approximately 50% pediatric and 50% adult.

This exceptional training opportunity offers comprehensive experience across the full spectrum of pediatric and adult craniofacial surgery. Fellows will gain robust exposure to:

  • Cleft and pediatric craniofacial surgery as part of our multidisciplinary craniofacial team
  • Maxillofacial surgery, including jaw tumors and jaw surgery
  • Adult and pediatric craniomaxillofacial trauma
  • Adult craniofacial surgery (including neurosurgical plastic reconstruction)
  • Gender-affirming facial surgery

Training occurs across four key sites:

  • UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland (Pediatric Level 1 Trauma Center with a sterilizable 3D Printing Center for surgical planning and innovation)
  • UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital San Francisco
  • UCSF Parnassus (University Campus)
  • Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (Adult Level 1 Trauma Center)

Fellows are appointed as Non-ACGME Fellows at the Clinical Instructor level. Clinical activity is on a supervised basis although Fellows will have independent surgical privileges.

Fellows are exposed to the full breadth of clinical and academic opportunities in plastic and reconstructive surgery across UCSF Plastic Surgery. Fellows are expected to participate in ongoing clinical research and to present original work at a national meeting.
